What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dental speciality that focuses on the alignment of teeth. The main purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create straighter teeth and a wider, more attractive smile.

Can anyone be treated?

Yes, anyone can receive orthodontic treatment and there is no age limit to orthodontic services. It is easier to move and realign teeth in younger people, however, so orthodontic treatments are often more common with children and teenagers.

What will happen at the first appointment?

During your first appointment, a brace will not be fitted. This first appointment will be used to thoroughly examine your teeth and create an effective treatment plan. The provisional plan will take into account your dental concerns, your dental development and the condition of your oral hygiene. After your first appointment, you will have a solid understanding of your treatment and the payment options available.

What does Orthodontic treatment involve?

Orthodontic treatment can vary depending on what your dental concerns are. In most cases, however, orthodontic treatment involves wearing a brace. Braces apply gentle pressure to move your teeth and support your jaw bone. Although there are different types of braces, they all follow this basic principle.

What are the different types of braces?

There are primarily two types of braces, removable and fixed. Removable braces work by exerting gentle pressure on teeth, for this reason, they are often used to fix simple alignment problems. Fixed braces apply more precise pressure, as its brackets remain attached to the teeth. A specialist at Bath Orthodontics will be able to help you determine which type of brace is right for you. See more information about the various Types of Braces here.

Will it make my teeth sore?

It is possible that your teeth may feel sore when a brace is first applied, but this should not prevent you from seeking orthodontic treatment. You may begin to feel soreness a few hours after your brace is fitted or tightened, and this sensitivity can last for 4-5 days. Mild pain killers can be used to help eliminate any discomfort.

Can I eat normally while wearing a brace?

While wearing a brace you can eat most foods and will not have to significantly change your diet. It is recommended, however, that you avoid hard and chewy foods that may damage your brace, for example, raw carrot and chewy toffee. You should also avoid biting down on hard foods, for example, you should not bite ice or hard-boiled sweets.

How do I clean my teeth?

When you wear a brace you should brush your teeth as normal and remember to brush underneath your brace. You may wish to use a softer toothbrush as this will allow you to clean every nook and cranny around your brace more easily. The Bath Orthodontics team will show you how to properly take care of your teeth and brace during your first fitting.

How long will treatment take?

The length of your treatment will depend on your age, bite problem and teeth concerns. If you follow the guidance of your orthodontist, you should expect to wear your brace for around 12-24 months. If you break your brace or miss an appointment, however, this can add significant length to your treatment time.

How often do I need to visit the orthodontist?

Generally, your brace will require adjustments every 6-12 weeks. This can vary, however, depending on your specific treatment requirements. Every time you visit your orthodontist, they will inform you of when your next treatment should take place.

How much does treatment cost?

Treatment costs can vary depending on the type of brace you choose and the severity of your case. For example, removable braces are often more expensive than fixed braces. At Bath Orthodontics, we offer affordable monthly instalment payments plans to suit your budget and can even offer our patients interest-free payment options. What are retainers?

Retainers are removable appliances that are used to keep your teeth straight and aligned once your braces are removed. Retainers are an important part of your orthodontic treatment plan and you should follow any guidance and advice you receive about wearing your retainer closely. For some patients, we may recommend including another form of retainer into your treatment, a fixed bar retainer behind your teeth that will be fixed to your teeth by a clinician. Even if you have a fixed bar retainer, it is important to wear your removable retainer also. If you do not wear your retainer as instructed your teeth may move out of alignment. Your orthodontist will explain to you everything you need to know about wearing a retainer.

I have lost or broken my retainers, what shall I do?

As soon as you notice your retainer is lost or broken you should contact Bath Orthodontics. If you are unable to wear your retainer as instructed your teeth may move and become unaligned. Even if you have not been in contact with Bath Orthodontics for an extended period of time, you should still contact us as soon as your retainer is damaged or lost and we will be able to help you. If you stop wearing your retainer for a significant amount of time, a replacement retainer may be uncomfortable or not fit you correctly, for this reason, it is important you contact us as soon as possible if you need a new retainer.
